A native of Sonoma, California, Barret’s passion for piano began at age 11 when he received an electronic keyboard for Christmas. Spending several months as an enthusiastic self-taught pianist, he was encouraged by his family to begin formal lessons on the instrument. A recent graduate of the University of Maryland, Barret received his Master’s Degree in Collaborative Piano under internationally acclaimed pianist and teacher, Rita Sloan.
He is an active vocal coach and accompanist at the University of Maryland where he has cherished the opportunities to work with undergraduate musicians. Barret recently completed his second season with Opera Terps, a student-run organization dedicated to providing undergraduate singers with experience in the operatic repertoire.
An avid chamber musician, Barret performs frequently in recitals at UMD and in the DMV area. He also holds a degree in solo piano from California State University Long Beach where he performed alongside The Bob Cole Wind Symphony at Carnegie Hall and studied under film composer Craig Richey.
Barret believes in inspiring a love and appreciation for music in his students. Structuring lessons to the individual student, he advocates a strong foundation in piano technique and music theory. When Barret is not practicing piano or teaching, he enjoys playing the organ, spending time with friends, swimming, and going to concerts.
